Service of the Lord's Day | August 16, 2020

Worship options

There is an outdoor worship service, weather-permitting, at 9:30 in the West Parking Lot. (See our recent update regarding outdoor worship.) We will attempt to live-stream that service on our YouTube channel. Below you will also find a virtual version of the worship service. As we improve our live-streaming abilities, we hope to ease-out this format.

Sunday morning updates:

7:45 a.m.: We still plan to worship in the West Parking Lot at 9:30 this morning. There is a small chance of rain, but we think we could play baseball through it (the probability of rain increases midday). We will adapt the service, if needed, to ensure that we make it at least "five innings," to extend the metaphor.

9:00 a.m.: Everything is a “go.” We will be gathering in the parking lot and live-streaming.

Live-stream

Here is a recording of the live-stream from the outdoor service.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Our Call to Worship today is a selection of verses from Psalm 133.

How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head,
          running down upon the beard,
     on the beard of Aaron,
running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the LORD ordained his blessing,
          life forevermore.

Opening Hymn

Prayer of Confession

Trusting in the grace of God, honor a moment of silence admitting the places how you separate yourself from God and one another.

We are forgiven in Jesus Christ. Sing along with this assurance of forgiveness.

We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God.
We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God.

THE WORD

Matthew 15:21-28

Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

Affirmation of Faith

Our affirmation of faith today is the Apostles’ Creed.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
